This thesis aims to analyze the intercultural writing strategies in the biography of the German author Barbara Beuys about Li Qingzhao which called The Price of Passion:A big time of China:Li Qingzhao's dramatic life(2004).After carrying out researches and preparations based on her interest and passion for Chinese culture in the old times and the prominent Chinese female poet Li Qingzhao,Barbara Beuys tried to show her German readers the life experience and literary achievement of Li Qingzhao, including the flourishing and prosperity of the Song dynasty in the eleventh century. As an important research field of the intercultural German Studies, the intercultural literature studies concentrate mainly on the interculturality in literary work.It refers not only to the theme, content and form of the text, but also to the generating context, creation and reception of the text.Under the framework of the Intercultural German Studies, there have been a large number of intercultural researches based on the theme, context, form and creation context of the intercultural text. However, the analysis of the intercultural writing strategies from the perspective of the text creation and reception is rare. This thesis begins with the introduction of the reader concept and then analyzes the intercultural writing strategies and methods Barbara Beuys used to introduce the Chinese poet Li Qingzhao and the unfamiliar Chinese culture to her German readers.Under this situation, the central research questions of this thesis would be the followings:How does the German author view and understand Chinese culture? What narrative strategies does the author use in order to reserve the otherness of Chinese culture or to prompt the German readers to approach Chinese culture? How does her German cultural background and her assumption of a potential German reader influence her writing process? And how does she deal with the cultural differences and similarities? In the theoretical part, this thesis discusses the interculturality and literature, intercultural writing and strategies,as well as cultural similarities and differences in literary work. The function of cultural differences in literature texts lies in the reservation of the otherness of other cultures.Meanwhile, the introduction of reader concept aims to reflex the importance of the assumption of a potential reader and his horizon of expectation.Based on this theoretical framework, this thesis will focus on certain sections in the biography related to cultural differences and similarities to analyze the strategies and methods of writing and cultural transmission.Important results of the thesis are as follows:The inculturality of Beuys' biography lies in the different cultural backgrounds of the author, the potential reader and the writing object; It is obvious that the author imagines a potential German reader who is also an ideal reader. He knows Chinese culture to some extent but far from the author does.On the one hand, the author shows her German cultural perspective to identify with her German reader. It can also manifest the limitation of her German perspective which leads to an insufficient understanding of Chinese culture. On the other hand, the author tries to compare Chinese culture with German culture,or use analogies between two cultures,or bring in European and German culture conceptions and terms,or add culture background knowledge etc.to keep the speciality and certain otherness of Chinese culture,as well as reducing certain otherness to avoid the misunderstanding from the reader.Besides, the author also shows that he establishes identity with Chinese culture and resonated with Chinese culture.
