Shi jing is one of the most influential classics in China,conveying various topics with concise and elegant language.A huge number of translators have devoted themselves to the translation of Shi jing from Chinese into English,both home and abroad.When it comes to the keywords in a poem,however,the problems become tangible,about how to project the visualization of Chinese character,and how to transport the essential idea in the source language.In order to tackle these tasks,the present study turns to "ideogrammic juxtaposition" for a feasible passage.First raised by Ernest Fenollosa,and then promoted by Ezra Pound,this method is applied in Pound's interpretation of Chinese verses and his poetry writing,as his translated works of Cathay and Shi jing,and his anthology Cantos.In virtue of the theoretical framework of paratactic hermeneutics,the keywords in the selected poems of Shi jing,as Tao yao,Jing nv,and Meng,are dismantled into several items etymologically.With a contrast and reference of other versions by James Legge,Arthur Waley and Xu Yuanchong,those principal Chinese characters in the original verses are disintegrated into units smaller than words,whose prime connotations are presented in the form of juxtaposition for target readers.The preliminary findings are twofold.Firstly,translators can utilize the method of ideogrammic juxtaposition to translate the crucial characters in Shi jing.With seldom or no interference,translators can unfold multiple kernel meanings in layers of contexts,to let the ideogram speak.Secondly,in terms of interpreting traditional verses from Chinese into English,it is attainable to disassemble the key words in the source language,and probe into original meanings of each portions,then present them in the form of ideogrammic juxtaposition in the target language,so as to constitute an ensemble more semantically enriched and formally swelled than a simply word-for-word replacement.The present study may shed light on the translation of Chinese classics of different genres in general.The ideogrammic juxtaposition can bridge different thinking patterns and philosophical backgrounds of English and Chinese.Moreover,the present study can prove that Chinese culture has referential significance for the theoretical establishment of translation studies,and it is beneficial to the construction of thoughts in the context of cross-context interchange.There still remains huge room for further improvement.
