Since the 1980s,the local realism in the field of Chinese oil painting has matured gradually and has its own value and independence of cultural subject with remarkable achievements.As the most representative realist artist in China in the 20th century,Liu Xiaodong adheres to the creative concept of realism and regards the people and things in his life calmly and truthfully.His works strive to show the individual living conditions in real life.Since the 1980s,he has been playing an important role in the field of Chinese contemporary oil painting.This paper takes Liu Xiaodong ’s works as the research object.First of all,it puts it in the context of Chinese native culture.It analyzes the social changes of Liu Xiaodong’s growing up and the influence of local realism during the formation of his artistic style,and explores the causes of Liu Xiaodong’s realistic painting features.Secondly,a comparative study is made between Liu Xiaodong’s works and those of the three representative artists,European and American,such as Lucian Freud,Eric Fischer and Gerhard Richter.Revealing the reasons why Liu Xiaodong’s works were influenced by the new European-American figurative paintings,and the artistic features of Liu Xiaodong’s work under the dual influence of realism and European and American neo-figurative paintings.Finally,by analyzing Liu Xiaodong’s influence and contribution to the localization of Chinese oil painting,he put forward his own opinions on how to explore individualized artistic language that highlights local characteristics and how to innovate in the art inheritance.
