A Comparison Between English And Chinese Emotion Psych Verbs From The Perspective Of Aspect

It is commonly accepted that emotion psych verbs belong to psychological verbs.In general,emotion psych verbs indicate human being’s positive or negative reactions to external stimuli.The research is a comparison between English and Chinese emotion psych verbs from the perspective of aspect.Based on Comrie’s three binary aspect features,namely,stative vs.dynamic,durative vs.punctual,and telic vs.atelic,when emotion psych verbs combine with different tense-aspect structures,their aspect features are complicated and changeable.The research manly focuses on the comparison of aspect features between English and Chinese emotion psych verb.Specifically,the research mainly focuses on the following questions:(1)What is the collocation situation of English and Chinese emotion psych verbs combining with different tense-aspect structures?(2)What are the similarities and differences between the emotion psych verbs in English and Chinese when combining with different tense-aspect structures?The corpus of this study are from COCA and BCC designed by Beijing Language and Culture University.The study objects are like/喜欢;sympathize/同情;hate/讨厌(厌恶),worry/担心.Via concrete data analysis,the research finds:(1)English emotion psych verbs widely combine with null aspect marker,which takes up dominant position.The verbs rarely combine with imperfective aspect and the perfective aspect sentence of the verb outnumbers that of imperfective aspect sentence.Chinese emotion psych verbs widely combine with neutral aspect taking up dominant position.In most cases,the sentence in which Chinese emotion psych combines with imperfective aspect outnumbers that of perfective aspect,which is different from English.(2)The change of English and Chinese emotion psych verb combining with different tense-aspect structures lies in telic vs.atelic features.The intrinsic time properties reflected by different tense-aspect structures lead to the corresponding change of the verb’s aspect features.This thesis consists of seven chapters.Chapter one introduces the study background;chapter two is the literature review of emotion psych verb;chapter three introduces the study framework;chapter four is the research design;chapter five is the date analysis;chapter six is the result and discussion based on chapter five,the last part is the conclusion,which makes a summary of the major findings and puts forward implications and limitations of the study.
