In daily lives, people from different countries or regions may have different living environments, social systems, religious beliefs, historical backgrounds, etc.,which all have exerted a profound influence on their languages. As a result, there is a large number of words and expressions containing various cultural information. But under the same cultural background, both sides of the communication may sometimes omit their common cultural background knowledge so as to improve the efficiency of communication, which is called"cultural default".Different from technical texts, literary works tend to have more cultural contexts and phenomena with specific meanings which might be difficult for nonnatives to comprehend.Since the translation of literary works always lays more emphasis on its literariness and relatively less to its veracity, translators may have more freedom to deal with frequent cultural default and apply some strategies to build a bridge between the source text and target text, which is the compensation strategy of cultural default. In this thesis, compensation strategies in literary works are divided into two main parts:explicit compensation and implicit compensation.Explicit compensation means that translators use distinct annotations to demonstrate his or her tendency of foreignization, such as in-text annotation, footnotes and endnotes.Implicit compensation strategies mainly include amplification, paraphrase and adaptation, aiming at realizing equal response for readers from both cultures.Mothering Sunday is an English novel with a wealth of cultural background knowledge.During the translation process, all the aforementioned compensation strategies are employed and proved to be necessary in the rendering of literary works.
