Based on the E-C translation of Mrs.Fletcher, this thesis is designed to study the use of Communicative Context Adaptation theory in reproducing characters. The modern family novel precisely captures the features and the conflicts between the two generations represented by the mother and the son.The first version of the translation was revised after a communicative contextual analysis of the main characters with an effort to present the more distinctive figures to target readers. The thesis starts with an introduction to different perspectives in translating novel characters.Based on the Adaptation Theory proposed by Verschueren and the characteristics of the source text, the research is narrowed down to the adaptation of communicative context, namely, the mental world, the social world and the physical world. The use of the theory in translating human figures is illustrated by the comparative study of the two translation versions with and without the use of the theory. It may be concluded that language use is a process of making linguistic choices for the purpose of adaptation.Literature translators should make dynamic adaptations to the mental, social and physical world of both characters and readers,by choosing different strategies, namely, amplification, division, omitting,so as to reproduce an intriguing story and a similar reading experience for popular fiction readers.
