Culture is an important soft power of a country. With the development of globalization, cultural exchanges become increasingly frequent.Reading literary works, especially original novels,is an effective way to learn about other country's history and culture. Therefore, literary translation is important for culture communication.Orphan Train is a masterpiece of Christina Baker Kline. It is based on a particular era and shows the author's superb writing skills and literary attainments, which makes it worth being translated.Skopostheorie, put forward by Hans Josef Vermeer in 1978,is the core concept of functionalist theory in Germany.Under Skopostheorie,Vermeer maintains that the skopos of translation determines translation strategies.Translators have the right to choose suitable translation strategies according to different translating purposes and target readers. The purpose of translating literary works is to exchange and convey artistic connotations of literary works. Therefore, translators should try to make readers fully understand cultural elements contained in original works.“Creative treason” is first proposed by French literary sociologist Robert·Escarpi in his work Sociologie de la Littérature and introduced by Professor Xie Tianzhen to China.Creative treason advocates that under clear purpose of translation, translators need to try to eliminate obstacles as well as let readers better understand the original texts. In this paper, numbers of typical examples from Orphan Train and its Chinese version are selected and made a comparative analysis in order to find out how creative treason happened in different ways during translation as well as what translation strategies are adopted by the translator for eliminating cultural barriers. After research, the author of this paper finds out that under the guidance of Skopostheorie, the target text is very similar with the source text in terms of language characteristics and rhetorical devices,so that readers can not only learn about the original content or ideas, but also felicitously appreciate the stylistic features and aesthetic value pertaining to the original text. What's more,in order to make the target readers learn more about Western culture and understand the basic meaning of the source text, the translator creatively adopts individual translation strategy, namely foreignization and domestication with the help of annotations;in order to create comfortable language environment for target readers and realize intra-lingual coherence, the translator creatively adopts abridged translation, compiling translation, addition strategies and sometimes changes the sentence structure;in order to be faithful to the original text, the translator adopts free translation strategy to make the target text consistent with the original one in terms of content, form and style as much as possible. It is hoped that the research results of this paper can provide more references for the translation of Orphan Train and other works with similar subjects.
