A Report On Translation Of Concrete Plant International

Concrete Plant International is a wel-known international concrete magazine edited in different languages,which covers the introduction of the latest technology and equipment of the concrete manufacture,and the information of the exhibition and forum concerning the concrete area.The author,as a part time translator of this magazine,is responsible for translating the articles of the concrete field from English into Chinese.This report is just composed on the basis of the translation practice of the magazine,and the purpose of the report is to share with the other translators the author's translation experience and ideas gained in this practice.The report is made up of four chapters: task description,procedure description,case analysis and summarization.Chapter One includes the description of the task background,the content of the text,translation brief,and the text features.Chapter Two outlines the task preparation,translation process and proofreading,and especially highlights the feasibility of application of Catford's shift theory into translation of concrete magazine.Chapter Three is the case analysis.In this part,based on Catford's shift theory,with ilustration of examples extracted from the translation practice,the author discusses the shift strategies respectively adopted at lexical level and sentence level in translation of concrete magazine.Chapter Four is the summarization of this report which contains the gains and deficiencies in this translation practice.The conclusion of this report is as follows: Translation shifts at lexical level involve levelshifts,class-shifts and intra-system-shifts.English words with inflection should be translated into Chinese words or phrases by level-shifts;English nouns and prepositions ought to be transformed into Chinese verbs by class-shifts;English pronouns can be shifted into Chinese ones by intra-system-shifts.Translation shifts at sentence level contain structure-shifts,unit-shifts and shifts of all kinds.With structure-shifts,there is a mutual transformation between active voice and passive voice,or between an active sentence and negative sentence;with unit-shifts,clauses are usually transformed into phrases or sentences according to the sentence characteristics;with multiple shifts,long sentences can be restructured so as to conform to the target language convention.
