A Report On Translating A Short Story-Blood Ties

Blood Ties,authored by American column writer Nathan Heller,is a documentary short story.This report on English-Chinese translation practice is based on the full text of Blood Ties,This text was mainly about the "Soering Case" which shocked Europe and America,and narrated the cause,after the results of "Soering Case" from another perspective.The text also narrates the differences of the parties and social influences in the past thirty years after the judgment.By analyzing the changes of humanity by living examples,this text also gives analysis of the differences of law between Germany and America under the effect of the rehabilitative German model and the American model.The characteristics of short story mainly include intensive characters,vivid plots,rigorous logic,concise narration,representative.Readers can see how things will develop from the first small beginnings and recognize the whole through observation of the part.Not only short story can shape typical characters,but also reveal the reality quickly.Under the guidance of Domestication Strategy,this report focuses on the translation of content,plot,and logic,and conveying vividly the main idea of the narrator to the readers.The author of this report analyzed the cases from lexical and syntactic level in the report.At lexical level,based on the characteristics of the original text,conversion of part of speech is adopted,including that nouns are converted into verbs and adjectives are translated into verbs.At syntactic level,direct speeches,descriptive sentences and passive sentences are analyzed.Combination is selected for direct speeches,shifting and extension for descriptive sentences and conversion for passive sentences.In addition,other translation methods,such as linear translation,transliteration,amplification and omission,are also employed in the practice.In conclusion,through this report,the author aims at improving the translation skills,learning more about translation of documentary short story,and deepening the understanding of documentary short story.
