William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the greatest dramatists and a leading representative of humanism during the European Renaissance in England.Macbeth, one of his four major tragedies,is rated as the most tragic and the most widely read among readers and critics the world over. Its undiminished popularity and unrivaled greatness have been engaging the attention of the academia for centuries and sustaining the academic concern and curiosity over the causes of its brilliant success. This thesis attempts to unveil the melancholy charms of Macbeth by probing into the gothic undertones in this drama, identifying the varied incorporations of gothic elements and acknowledging their effectiveness. This thesis develops with dual focuses. One is on the exploration of the gothic elements in Macbeth, including gothic plots, gothic settings, gothic characters, gothic narratives and gothic themes. The other focus, simultaneously, unveils the thematic implications and social significance of the gothic Macbeth by examining Shakespeares’ s stance as a humanist. It is concluded that the bold and profuse use of gothic elements in this drama not merely enhances the tragic and melancholy tone of the piece, making it one of the most memorable and endurable among Shakespearean creations, but also effectively illuminates Shakespeare’s humanistic stance and his earnest concern over the overall destiny of humankind.
