Research On The English Education Of Protestant Schools In Modern Jiangxi

After the two Opium Wars,the western powers poured into China under the unequal treaties.This directly results in the abundant emergence of the protestant schools in Jiangxi,which is featured by its outstanding English teaching.This paper makes an interdisciplinary study of the English education of protestant schools in Jiangxi,tracing its historical backgrounds,its teaching conditions and its influences on modern Jiangxi education,and that of the whole country.The study found that Jiangxi protestant schools'English education had the following characteristics:(1)It had a very strict criteria for the admission of students and enrollment of teachers.(2)It critically introduced original text books and other teaching materials.(3)English was highlighted in the curriculums.(4)The English education was closely around the religious education.(5)It adopted new teaching methods,paying attention to the combination of Chinese and western methods.(6)The examination system was strict.(7)The English extracurricular activities were rich and colorful.The English education in Jiangxi protestant schools had a wide and deep influence on the modernization of Jiangxi.They had trained a large number of western-style talents for the society.The English teaching experience of those schools provided theoretical and practical references.
