Translation Strategies Of Epistemic Modality In Scientific And Technical Text

In recent years,with China’s rapid economic development,strengthening of international trade,and in-depth academic exchange,technical translation is more and more involved in the field of translation.Therefore,the problem in scientific translation deserves our full attention,and modal translation in scientific text is one of them.Although some scholars have begun to focus on modal translation problem in scientific text,but it is only involved in research level,knowledge review and summarizing some rules and characteristics.On the basis of previous studies,this paper will delve modal translation in scientific text and put forward translation strategies of cognitive modality.This article discusses strategies of epistemic modality in scientific translation.It first describes the differences in modal expression between Chinese and English,and discusses the characteristics of epistemic modality in scientific text.Then it summarizes the characteristics of traditional modal verbs and other modal expressions in "Introduction to naval architecture".According to statistics,we can draw a conclusion that epistemic modality accounts for a significant proportion in scientific text.Therefore,the article offers three translation strategies.They are transforming the level value of epistemic modality,omitting modal elements,transforming the tone domain.These methods contribute to better translation of scientific text,and make the readers more easier to obtain the information.
