An interpreter needs to get speakers' message across and strive to convey one hundred per cent of what speakers say and their intents if possible. However, omissions more often than not occur during the speech reformulation phrase. The author found quite a few improper omissions had been made during the consecutive interpretation from Chinese to English at the mock conference “2016 Overseas Infrastructure and Investment Forum”.There were four types of improper omissions, namely, conscious intentional omissions, conscious unintentional omissions, conscious receptive omissions and unconscious omissions. The contents omitted include manner of speaking, numbers and date, proper nouns and terms, examples that the speaker had cited, logical links and modifiers. The study seeks to answer the following questions:(1)why do interpreters make improper omissions?(2)what coping strategies can interpreters take to avoid making such omissions?... |
