George Kennan and Paul Nitze are the main policymakers of the policy of containment during the Truman administration.Containment theory constitutes the guiding ideology of Truman's national security policy.Containment theory has become the theoretical basis of American diplomatic strategy throughout the Cold War.By comparing and studying their containment theory,we can better understand the evolution of American containment strategy for the Soviet Union,can comprehend the operation mechanism of American foreign policy,and can come to know the strategic thoughts of the Cold War from the perspective of strategic thinkers.Untangling and comparing the connotation of containment theory between George Kennan and Paul Nitze is the key of the dissertation.The dissertation is composed of the introduction and three chapters.The introduction introduces the researches at home and abroad about containment theory of George Kennan and Paul Nitze,and reviews the researches on the American national security strategy in the early postwar period.The first chapter untangles and argues the containment theory of George Kennan and Paul Nitze,and explores the evolution of their containment theory,and reveals the core of containment theory.On this basis,the first chapter compares and analyzes their containment theory,explores the identity and difference,and pursues its inherent essence.Based on the domestic and international political environment at that time,the different experience of George Kennan and Paul Nitze,and the political choice of the leaders,the second chapter analyzes the reason of the difference of their containment theory.In order to highlight the inherent continuity of American national security strategy,the third chapter explores the influence of containment theory of George Kennan and Paul Nitze on American national security policy during the Truman administration and post-Truman Era.As the important strategic thinkers in the United States after World War II,George Kennan and Paul Nitze provide a theoretical guidance for making American strategy on the Soviet Union during the Cold War.The comparative study on George Kennan and Paul Nitze not only can enrich the researches of containment theory,but also can provide a reference to the comparative study on the international strategic thinkers during the Cold War.
