Western Han River was known as Yangshui in ancient times.The upper reaches of the river flows through the Li County and XiHe County in Gansu Province.A systematic analysis on the tributaries of the Western Han River shows that most of the rivers recorded in the "commentary on the waterways classics·Yangshuir" can correspond to the existing waterway and most of the historical sites around the Yangsui can also trace its clue in archaeological excavations and surveys.Although the ancient historical and geographical information about the river basins in the Western Han Dynasty,especially the upper reaches,were recorded in detail in "commentary on the waterways classics-Yangshui",but errors maybe exist.This paper takes "commentary on the waterways classics-Yangshui" as a clue and observed the upper reaches of river basins in the Western Han Dynasty,which a is relatively complete geographical area,with archaeological view.The corresponding relation between the upper reaches of ancient and modern Western Han River system is determined by analyzing the text of "commentary on the waterways classics-Yangshui".combing ruins and relics of the river basin in Western Han Dynasty,Zhou Qin kingdom and the Han and Wei dynasties,restoring the cultural landscape of the upper reaches of Western Han River in the Northern Wei Dynasty and carrying out the field archaeological investigation and literature research.The geographical locations of the historical sites like Xixian Gucheng,Quanqiu,Xichui palace and Lianggulei,etc are determined and the errors and omissions in the recording of "commentary on the waterways classics· Yangshui" is further explored to analyze the reason behind the error.Issues need to be taken into account in using the "commentary on the waterways classic" for archaeological research is summed up.
