A Translation Report On Study Of Deng Xiaoping’s Theory On Social Construction (Section 1-3,Chapter 2)

As globalization gains momentum,countries have become more engaged in economic,political,cultural and non-governmental exchanges.China is the world’s second largest economy,one of the major forces in the international arena.Therefore,translation for political publicity plays a bigger role in introducing China to the rest of the world.The quality of translations of political essays not only have much to do with China’s international image,but also determines the influences of cultural export.Based on such situation,the translator selects Study of Deng Xiaoping’s Theory on Social Construction as the source text of this translation practice.This paper consists of two parts.This first part is the source text--the first three sections of Chapter II of Study of Deng Xiaoping’s Theory on Social Construction with nearly 33,000 words and the target text.The source text introduces Utopian Socialists’ designs for social construction,the thought of social construction of Marxism and Chinese Communist Party’s experience on social construction in the soviet areas,liberated areas and after the founding of People’s Republic of China.The second part is a translation report based on the source and target texts.This report consists of four chapters.The first chapter mainly states the background,text introduction,theoretical guidance,and significance of this translation practice.The second chapter mainly introduces the translation process including preparations before translation,translation tools,and quality control.The third chapter is case study which is the focus of the paper.The translator analyzes the translation methods of the source text from the aspects of words and sentences,and introduces translation techniques adopted in the translation.The last chapter summarizes the gains and experiences acquired during the course of this translation,and the limitations of the translation practice.Newmark’s text typology is taken as the theoretical guidance.Newmark divided text into three types,namely the informative text,expressive text and vocative text.Through this translation practice,the translator masters the features and style of political essays,and translation strategy and skills in this front.All these have laid a solid foundation for author’s future career and can provide reference for later Chinese-English translation of political essays.
