Comparative Studies On The Gender-biased Words In China Mainland And Taiwan

This papers compares gender-biased words from China mainland and Taiwan to investigate the difference of these two Chinese languages,contributing to a larger Chinese vocabulary.For the purpose of embracing words from both areas,the vocabulary vacancy about gender-biased items,motions and spirits is filled up,which will lead to better linguistic communication of two sides.Studying methodologies vary according to the topics,including literature review,statistical analysis and comparative study.Main reference of this paper is the Chinese cross-straits dictionary of word differences published in 2014 by Prof.Li Xingjian.From the perspective of the gender-biased words,this papers compares the usage of modern languages in historical meanings,construction of words,referential expression,etymology and social culture,respectively.Firstly,homographs,synonyms and special examples are expressed to explain the discrepancy between Chinese in both sides and the historical reasons.Following by the analysis in word simplification,structural metaphor,transliteration and the fabrication of new words.As for the referential expression,words with various emotions are reorganized in the paper,for example,circumbendibus,elegance,eschew,joke,alternativity,hypocorism,reverence,proverb,detraction and argot.Then,the etymology of two languages are compared based on their autochthonous words and imported words.Finally,culture differences caused by gender-biased words are introduced in detail to illustrate the potential misunderstandings.
