Academic writing is a highly socialized behavior(Hyland,2000),in which a dialog is established by bringing in prior texts with which the writers explicitly interact in a form known as “manifest intertextuality”(Fairclough,1992).Citations can be typically defined as explicit dialogues or interactions among writers, cited authors and readers,as one of the most distinct generic characteristics of academic writing. This study, based on citation related theories and Martínez's(2008)citation move analysis, aims to explore linguistic characteristics of citations, the establishment of interactions in citations and also citation flows by examining 100 research articles from disciplines of Text linguistics and Sociolinguistics which have been published on Chinese Social Citation Index(CSSCI)journals in last decade. Our studies suggest that manifested dialogical interactions(Martínez,2008)between article writers and other cited authors are constructed and established associated with the use of citations,in order to realize the rhetorical purpose of interactions through citations. The findings of this study indicate the main purpose of interactions through citations is to construct specific interactions between writers and authors, thus to enrich own articles. We found that the proportion of citing foreign scholars' works are occupied much higher than citing Chinese scholars' works, therefore, citation flows mainly from foreign scholars to Chinese scholars and from influential scholars to ordinary scholars. It also indicates that Chinese scholars prefer to build interactions with foreign scholars.Theoretically, this study tentatively explores the interactions between authors from the perspective of citation analysis. We hope it will contribute to the understanding of the essential role of citations in promoting one's academic writing, and it has significant implications for the research article writers to use citations properly.
