Epochal Characteristics Of Intra-lingual Pragmatic Failure Analysis Of Ordinary World Based On Face Theory

Pragmatic failure is an important language phenomenon,which is an important factor that influences interpersonal communication.Pragmatic failure has a long history,existing in various verbal communications with all kinds of language culture backgrounds.Pragmatic failure gains attention from many scholars,especially from Chinese scholar.Pragmatic failure in communication often causes misunderstanding from the perspectives of both the speaker and the hearer.Some pragmatic failures even are acceptable while some will bring destructive effects and the result will be far beyond people’s imagination.This is the value and the meaning why many scholars research on pragmatic failure.However,there are few theses about pragmatic failure abroad and home,and there are even fewer theses about intra-lingual pragmatic failure.The thesis lays stress on intra-lingual pragmatic failure from Face Theory,which not only theoretically enriches researches on intra-lingual pragmatic failure,but also enhances people’s understanding of intra-lingual pragmatic failure,and helps people avoid intra-lingual pragmatic failure and provides more efficient methods to have a successful communication.Based on this,the thesis takes the face theory of Brown & Levinson’s Face Theory as the theoretical framework.And the author selects 100 samples from Ordinary World.During the collection,the author makes some proper analysis and conclusion for the corpus,and uses the literature and qualitative method to describe and analyze the utterances with intra-lingual pragmatic failures.In this thesis,the author mainly discusses the following questions: What are epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failures in Ordinary World in the 1970 s and in the 1980s? What are the differences between intra-lingual pragmatic failures in two different eras? What strategies can be used to avoid intra-lingual pragmatic failures from the perspective of Face Theory?Through the research,we have the following findings: Firstly,there are the epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure differences in marriage and family relationship,in social relationship and in political relationship.Secondly,there are particular epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure in marriage and family relationship in the1970s:(1)utterance ignoring father’s high status in family;(2)utterance ignoringfamily’s hatred for struggle meeting;(3)utterance ignoring people caring for food.There are particular epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure in social relationship in the1970s:(1)utterance ignoring society opposing capitalism;(2)utterance ignoring consciousness of euphemism;(3)utterance ignoring social negative attitude towards male doing housework.There are particular epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure in political relationship in the197 0s:(1)the epochal characteristic of intra-lingual pragmatic failure is utterance ignoring officers’ high status in struggle meeting.Thirdly,there are particular epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure in marriage and family relationship in the1980s:(1)utterance ignoring son’s rising status in family;(2)utterance ignoring family’s hatred for dividing up family;(3)utterance ignoring people caring for health condition.There are particular epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure in social relationship in the1980s:(1)utterance ignoring society opposing corruption;(2)utterance ignoring embryonic consciousness of euphemism;(3)utterance ignoring social consciousness against incompetent officers.There are particular epochal characteristics of intra-lingual pragmatic failure in political relationship in the1980s:(1)the epochal characteristic of intra-lingual pragmatic failure is utterance ignoring husband high status in one-child policy.Fourthly,the differences of epochal characteristic in two eras result from the change of marriage and family relationship,the change of social relationship and the change of political relationship.Fifthly,there are two politeness strategies used in intra-lingual pragmatic failure,and we can divide them into two categories: giving positive face to the other side and obtaining one’s own face by giving others’ face.This thesis finds the epochal characteristic of intra-lingual pragmatic failure after making analysis of the intra-lingual pragmatic failure examples in Ordinary World in the1970 s and in the 1980 s and it attempts to find the cause of intra-lingual pragmatic failure and not only to provide a new perspective for our understanding of intra-lingual pragmatic failure,but also to help people avoid intra-lingual pragmatic failure and communicate more effectively.
