Rewriting Of Female Consciousness

This translation task is the translation of an excerpt of The Secret of Life,a work of American women’s literature,in which women’s consciousness and values play a very important role for guiding female readers to live a better life.The initiator of the task is a publisher.The translation theory adopted is Rewriting Theory of André Lefevere and rewriting of female consciousness is taken as the translation strategy to represent the original female consciousness in the context of the target language.The ideological differences between Chinese and Western countries lead to the different acceptance of Chinese and Western female readers for the same text.Consequently,it is necessary to proceed some rewritings to the original in a given way during translation so that the translation not only conveys the original female consciousness but also conforms to the acceptance of the target readers.Rewriting of female consciousness is basically manipulated through three aspects,namely,female equal and independent consciousness,female emotional consciousness,and female sexual consciousness,with corresponding translation methods.While rewriting female consciousness for pursuing equality and independence,the translator inspires the target readers to fight for their equality when being treated unequally and strive for their independence.While rewriting female consciousness for inner emotion,the directness and loyalty for true love of Western women are highlighted to encourage the target readers to pursue and guard their true love;however,deliberate wording without too much straightforwardness should be considered in case of bringing them repugnance and aversion.While rewriting female sexual consciousness,the details or explicit description of sex in the source text are weakened by replacing with Chinese idioms,set phrases or allusions etc.to avoid the shock from the different ideology as well as awaken the target readers’ consciousness.Therefore,the ultimate purpose of guiding target readers to live their best life will be gradually achieved.Four chapters are generated to illustrate the whole process: task description,process description,case study and conclusion.In the first chapter,the general information of the task is introduced,including its purpose and objective.And then,the translation process is explained through pre-translation,during translation and post-translation.The source text and its author are introduced and Rewriting Theory is specifically explained.Certain methods are mentioned under this theory.Case study is the third chapter,in which the selected sentences are listed to prove the successful employment of the translation strategy and methods.It is classified into three categories accordingly,i.e.,female equal and independent consciousness,emotional consciousness and sexual consciousness.At last,a conclusion is drawn to state the findings and limitations;corresponding suggestions are proposed as well.
