| Many Chinese students have been attracted by Australian nursing training system which is characterized by low entry, short term and an effective channel to combine theory with practice. The task of translating Australian Nursing and Midwifery Education Center Student Handbook was initiated by a Chinese medical college’s leader. The handbook is an administrative manual for its trainees, published in September 2013 with no Chinese version found yet.The translator translated the whole handbook for the benefit of potential students to study in ANMEC.The material mainly introduces ANMEC’s rules and regulations from entrance qualification to graduation requirements including much Australian administration and nursing knowledge, which makes it a challenge for a translator to conquer. Therefore, the translator should make adequate preparation by consulting overseas students, searching on the Internet and referring to professional articles. The report describes the significance and process of the translation and choose the skopos theory as guiding theory and intra-text coherence as the strategy to achieve accuracy, readability and proper style for Chinese readers.Under the guidance of skopos theory, the report analyzes some cases from the lexical level and the syntactical level with certain translation techniques such as literal translation, free translation, omission, amplification, conversion, combination, inversion.Meanwhile,a few doctors, medical school students and Chinese teachers were invited to polish the draft to improve its accuracy and fluency. The report discusses some translation phenomena during the translation of this handbook and summarizes some practical methods, hoping to be able to provide some reference for English to Chinese translation on manuals. However, due to the limited selected material, the paper fails to make a systematic summary on manual translation. |
