The Research Of Villages And Landscapes Names Of Shanxi In Memorial Tablets Of Tang Tombs

As an important part of the traditional Shanxi culture(or even Yellow River culture),Shanxi plays an extremely important role in Chinese history.The toponym of Shanxi is one of the symbols of historical and cultural characteristics of Shanxi.However,the majority of the historical records on toponym of Shanxi is mainly on administrative divisions,famous mountains and great rivers,which neglects or confuses the village residential area and landscape names.The systematic research is needed.Memorial tablets of Tang tombs describe the background,merit,and genealogy of the dead.More importantly,it contains the birthplaces,burial grounds and the four boundaries of burial grounds,which is an important material for the study of the geography of Shanxi in Tang Dynasty.There are an enormous amount of Tang Dynasty tombs unearthed in Shanxi,and it contains a lot of geographical information about Shanxi,which serves as important materials for us to study the toponym of Shanxi.In this paper,based on the corpus of Tang Dynasty tombs unearthed in Shanxi,Shanxi’s place names of villages and landscapes are studied,including its geographical location,name origin and historical culture carries.There are three parts in this paper.The first part is the first chapter: introduction.This part mainly introduces the research status,research materials,research objects,research methods,as well as a brief description of the regional situation of Shanxi in Tang Dynasty.The second part consists of the second and the third chapter,which is the main content of the thesis.In this part,we investigate the villages and landscapes names of Shanxi in memorial tablets of Tang tombs one by one.In the second chapter,we discusse the villages names of Shanxi.The majority of them are not recorded in history books and local records,which can supplement the gaps.Due to the fact that the materials are distributed unevenly,with Taiyuan and Luzhou unearthed more,this chapter is divided into three sections: the research of villages names in Taiyuan,the research of villages names in Luzhou,the research of villages names in other areas of Shanxi.We studied its geographical location,name origin and historical culture carries,as well as related states.In the third chapter,we studied landscapes names of Shanxi.Names of mountains and rivers are separately discussed.We focused on villages names in Taiyuan and then Luzhou,and other areas of Shanxi the last are discussed when necessary.Some of mountain names are not recorded in history books,and our research can supplement the gaps.Some are recorded in history books,but only the geographical position and characteristics are concerned.The material regarding the source records is dispersed.Names of rivers are mostly recorded in history books,but only refer to their flow region,the tributaries,and so on,almost no reference the source of name.In this part,we not only describe its catchment area and water flow division,but also research the source of name,combining with the language and the history.The third part is the fourth chapter.In this part,we research villages and landscapes names of Shanxi in Memorial tablets of Tang tombs from a cultural perspective.We mainly research the source of name,the phenomenon of different places with the same name and the same place with different names,as well as cemetery of Shanxi.Villages and landscapes names of Shanxi are mainly named by geographical location,geographic characteristics,historical stories,myths and legends,lucky words,allusions and surname.The phenomenons of different places with the same name and the same place with different names are not only reflects the relevant laws of naming,but also reflects the evolution of speech and names of history,which can provide materials on the study of phonology and philology.In addition,researching cemetery of Shanxi can provide some clues for the development of archaeological work in Shanxi.
