On Subtitle Translation Of The Lion King From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

With the Chinese and foreign cultural exchanges being increasingly frequent,more and more foreign language films are brought into China.It becomes an integral part of cultural exchange among the art form of mass communication,undertakes the important task of cultural dissemination and is also the major carrier of Chinese and foreign cultural communication.As an important tache of the propagation of foreign film culture,film subtitle translation is particularly important.High quality film subtitle translation can not only allow Chinese audiences to enjoy the film better,but also promote the dissemination and exchange of cultures.However,the quality of film subtitle translation at the present is unsatisfactory.Hence,the research on guided theory,strategies and methods of film subtitle translation is of great significance.According to the current status of film subtitle translation research,on the basis of the famous American translation theorist Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory,this thesis analyzes the feasibility and necessity of functional equivalence theory that can be applied to do research on the English film subtitle translation.Centered on the response of the receivers,functional equivalence theory emphasizes the equivalent response between the target language readers and the source language readers,and it also points out that the essence and task of translation is to make the source language information be reproduced by using the closest natural equivalent language.Film subtitle translation is to transfer film information,and make the target language audiences truly feel what the film proximately delivers,which is consistent with the central idea of functional equivalence theory.Thus,functional equivalence theory can be applied to study film subtitle translation.This thesis chooses subtitle translation of the famous English Disney animated film The Lion King as the research material.It analyzes and demonstrates functional equivalence in the subtitle translation of the film The Lion King from the linguistic,stylistic and cultural aspects.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the author summarizes the strategies and techniques to be used in the process of subtitle translation,mainly including domestication,addition,omission,paraphrase,adaptation of cultural images,adaptation of colour words,etc.In the end,this thesis concludes that Nida's functional equivalence theory can effectively guide film subtitle translation and promote the development of film subtitle translation...
