A Report Of Consecutive Interpretation For The Truck Lamp Of Project J7 By The First Lighting Co.,Ltd

In the 21 st century,global economy has been interacting much more than ever before.Taking this opportunity,multinational corporations and joint-ventures are proliferating across the world.The auto industry in China also witnesses an increasingly booming,so do the automobile component manufacturers.To catch up with edge-cutting technology and management expertise,some of them either combine into Sino-foreign joint venture,or recruit independent foreign managers.When developing truck lamp of Project J7 for the FAW-Jiefang Company,the First Lighting Co.,Ltd has also recruited a British project manager.Thanks to previous experience in this area,the interpreter gets the chance to interpret for the Project J7,and thus this paper is a practice report about three of the consecutive interpretation of meetings about the Project J7 from July to November in 2016.The interpreting has been directed by interpretive theory from the beginning to the end.The idea that “to re-express the sense which is to be conveyed in source language” is seen as the top principle by the interpreter,and she applies the interpretive theory flexibly,identifies the difficulties of technical interpretation of the Project J7,and then formulates her own ideas regarding the translation method specific to each difficulty.In addition,relevant knowledge and skills,which have been obtained during the interpreter’s pursing of MTI degree,are also applied in the interpreting practice.This practice report consists of six chapters,which are the introduction,the process of interpretation,the analysis of difficult points about the consecutive interpreting of the Project J7,theoretic guidance of the interpretive theory,interpreting methods and case analysis,and summary.Chapter one is the introduction,describes the background of interpreting assignment(which includes requirements from the client,and obligations of the interpreter),and the structure of the report.Chapter two is a description about the process of interpretation,which includes preparation before the interpreting,description about the ongoing of interpretation,and summary after interpreting.The preparation before interpreting is the key step,which includes the collection of thematic knowledge about the Project J7,the forecast of relative word bank,and so on.Chapter three concludes the three biggest difficulties of this assignment,which are the linguistic difference on two languages,culture-loaded expressions,and the technical terminology of proper nouns and abbreviations.Chapter four briefly introduces the interpretive theory which guides the whole interpretation,and also studies the feasibility why the technical interpretation can be directed by this theory.The interpreter briefly introduces the back drop of the formulation of this theory,its key concept of “sense”,and the famous triangular model,whose high light is “deverbalization”,and “deverbalization” is a cognitive process.The interpreter also briefly introduces the basic ideas of this theory,that the re-expression of “sense” in the target language must be based on what is conveyed through words rather than the words form,and to correctly understand source language,linguistic knowledge and encyclopedic knowledge are indispensible.This chapter also describes the feature of the J7 Project,which is a technical text and featured with technical terms,abbreviations and professional knowledge in the industry of automotive lighting.These features require the guidance of the interpretive theory in its consecutive interpreting.Chapter five is the heart of this report,and it analyzes the interpreting methods,which are specific to every difficult point.Bearing in mind the idea that “the re-expression of ‘sense’ in the target language must be based on what was conveyed through words” as the top principle,and taking full consideration of the features of technical translation,the interpreter delves into cases analysis in association of linguistic knowledge,subject knowledge,and the encyclopedic knowledge.Firstly,the linguistic differences between Chinese and English are interpreted by the methods of addition,omission,division and reconstruction.Secondly,the culture-loaded expressions are interpreted by the method of foreignizing and domesticating.Thirdly,the technical proper nouns and abbreviations are interpreted by the method of graphic borrowing,semantic translation,and asking for explanation.Fourthly,most of the communications,which are not the difficult points,are interpreted by other methods,such as syntactic linearity.Chapter six is a summary,where limitations are identified,and proposals are made for future work.This practice is very fruitful.The interpreter applies the interpretive theory into consecutive interpreting of the Project J7,not only improves her translation capability,but also deepens the interpreter’s understanding about this theory.The interpreter also hopes that this report will be useful for learners in technical interpretation.
