The traditional festival culture is an indispensable element of social development,but the traditional festivals in the contemporary social development are facing severe challenges.This grim reality requires the revival of traditional festivals and the reconstruction of Festival cultural space.Traditional festival is a kind of important materials of place identity research in geography.The differences of the place identity characteristics among the different practice groups of traditional festivals,and the influence of the placeness of the traditional festivals on the construction of the place identity of cultural groups is worthy of study.This thesis makes case study of the Capital Chenghuang Temple Festival in Xi’an,to find out the differences of the place identity among different cultural groups and the affecting factors and mechanisms of the place identity construction.This thesis helps to enrich the study on place identity theory through the perspective of new cultural geography,and adds the content of place identity research by traditional festivals;meanwhile can provide an important reference for the development and reconstruction of traditional festivals,the construction of the festival culture space be filled with rich cultural connotation and a harmonious atmosphere,and even to enhance the soft power of the city.Search Chinese and English literature through two databases "How Net" and "Elsevier” respectively to review the studies at home and abroad.The review includes three parts:(1)the research progress of place identity at home and abroad;(2)the research progress of festivals at home and abroad;(3)the progress of the relationship study on traditional festivals and local identity both inside and outside China.Combine local chronicles and network literature to search materials about the Capital Chenghuang Temple Festival in Xi’an and explore placeness characteristics and changing course of the Temple Festival.The quantitative data were collected by questionnaire,and the qualitative data were collected by participant observation and interview.The questionnaire consists of three parts:(1)the behavior characteristics of investigators and the cognition of the placeness characteristics of the Temple Festival;(2)survey the place identity characteristics using the Likert scale;(3)the basic information of the respondents.Qualitative data is a necessary supplement to the quantitative data,mainly involves three aspects:(1)the overall perception of the Temple Festival;(2)the participation to the Temple Festival of the interviewees;(3)the emotional preference to the Temple Festival of the interviewees.Use SPSS20.0 to carry on frequency statistics,descriptive statistics,data quality analysis,factor analysis and non parametric test.Use frequency and descriptive statistics to obtain the overall information of the sample.Alpha reliability coefficient method is used to test the data reliability and KMO value and Bartlett sphericity test are used to test the Construct validity.Factor analysis is used to test the three dimensions of place identity: cognition,emotion and intention.Nonparametric test is used to test the differences of place identity in different groups.Combine correlation analysis with text analysis to explore the affecting factors of the place identity construction,and then do text analysis of the participant observation,interview records and network text to explore the affecting mechanism on place identity construction.The results and conclusions are as follows.(1)The traditional festival positively effects place identity from three dimensions of cognition,emotion and intention.(2)The place identity of different cultural groups constructed basing on the traditional festival is different from each other.(3)The change of the traditional festival placeness characteristics effect the construction of place identity.(4)The “identity” of traditional festival practitioners influences their construction of place identity;(5)“Belief “is an important factor of the traditional festival with religious meaning to strengthen place identity construction;(6)Suitable modest official presence helps practitioners of the traditional festival construct the place identity;(7)The cognitive level and age structure of traditional festival practitioners effect the construction of place identity.Suggestions for the development of traditional festivals are based on the above conclusions.(1)Continue the complementary between folk channels and official channels.(2)Adhere to inheriting with development,developing with protection and the combination of traditional culture and new technology.(3)Adhere to the appropriate and moderate official presence.
