As the representing modern writers in native writing, both William Faulkner and Jia Pingwa introspect the predicament of human existence caused by mechanical civilization.Written in the late 20 thcentury, the two writers' outstanding works The Bear and Cherish the Memory of the Wolf are still fascinating to critics. The significance of the two novels is obvious, while a systemic study of ecological criticism, especially on exploiting bear and wolf through integrity of literal discourse and cultural analysis has always been neglected.Being a rising criticism in the last century,eco-criticism emphasizes the reflection of various environmental and ecological problems appearing in the process of economic development.Meanwhile,it calls for solving the problem of human alienation by returning human nature to the whole environment.Absorbing from this,Faulkner and Jia Pingwa indicates that under the alternation of hunting civilization and industrial civilization, both man and wild animals have suffered a lot from the great transformation. Thus,by analyzing preys and hunters' ecological behaviors like struggling and protecting each other in the wild, this paper aims to reveal the similar consideration that Faulkner and Jia Pingwa share, namely, maintaining ecological integrity and respecting for nature can promote the healthy development in human society.Through the description of positive effects of totem on interpersonal relationship and ethics, the thesis shows Faulkner and Jia Pingwa's major concerns on reshaping environment-centered belief, with the conclusion that under the basis of ecological holism, both literary works shed light on the ecological ideal ofharmonious existence and social morality.
