This paper attempts to explain why prohibition,a religious discipline, could be written into the Constitution of the United States of America in 1919 and why it was eventually repealed in 1933.The author adopts the research methods of cultural studies and historical explanation and finds that the prohibition amendment was the result of America's religious influence on politics and its repeal was because of the country's liberalistic traditions and the principle of separation between church and state. It is concluded that although religion still plays a certain role in its political and social life, the United States of America has gradually evolved into a modern secular country.
