A Report Of Liaison Interpreting

The globalization of world economy has brought about comprehensive effects in many aspects.It's under the push of economic globalization that hotel equipment and supply exhibitions mushroomed in recent years.These exhibitions both enable Chinese professionals to visit abroad and foreigners to come to China to do the purchasing.This thesis will,based on the author's interpreting practice for the 22 nd Guangzhou Hotel Equipment and Supply Exhibition,give a detailed analysis of the pre-task preparation and the role of liaison interpreter in the exhibition setting.According to Relevance Theory,the interpreter needs to conduct reasoning in a desired context to find the Optimal Relevance,while context is the premise of reasoning.In the pre-task preparation section,the author discusses about the context construction process in terms of long term preparation(interpreting competence development)and short term preparation(text collection,speech anticipation,glossary building).Based on the theory of Cecilia Wadensjo and Goffman,and the work of professor Wen Ren about interpreter's visibility,the author analyzes the role of the liaison interpreter as gate keeper,conversation co-builder and information mediator.The conclusion part for the thesis discusses major finding,limitation as well as suggestion.What the interpreter found from preparation stage is that the information acquired from speakers is much more useful and accurate than that from self-research.In the task process stage,the interpreter found that incoherency happened so frequently that she had to keep tracking the topics and keep integrating speakers' source texts.Sometimes she had to omit some phrases or sentences to achieve coherency.The post task evaluation suggests that feedbacks from others help the interpreter find out some unnoticeable insufficiency and that prompt self reflection may points to both the merits and demerits of interpreting practice.At the end of this thesis,the author also suggests to collect more parallel corpus for further research and suggests to carry out more studies on personal pronouns.
