Analyses On Logic Rationality Presented By Thematic Progression Patterns In Common Sense

As soon as the thematic progression patterns(TPPs)are put forward by Danes(1974),they have been hot issues of many researchers.The theme and rheme structure is of significance in revealing the distribution of thematic structures(TS)and TPPs,which is accessible to the skeleton and the main idea of the entire text for the readers.Hence,the studies prefer to researches of texts,especially the field of comparative studies between different languages,studies of translation and language teaching.In a word,researches upon studying the rationality of TPPs by Logic Reasoning Patterns(LRPs)are rare,so it is worthy of exploring further.Based on Huang(1988),the TPPs are divided into six categories: parallel,linear,derived,crossing,constant and comparison TPPs.With the LRPs of Jin(1937):reasoning of sufficient conditions(RSC),reasoning of necessary conditions(RNC),reasoning of sufficient and necessary conditions(RSNC)and compatibly disjunctive reasoning(CDR),the interpretations are presented for the rationality of TPPs in Thomas paine's political pamphlet,Common Sense(CS).By analyzing and discussing,findings have it as follows:(1)TS: a.Clausal theme takes an overwhelming proportion because of its effectiveness in providing sufficient information.b.Simple theme contains less information which leads to the least proportion.(2)TPPs: a.Parallel,linear and derived patterns own the highest frequency in order.On the ground that,parallel patterns are able to pile the information centering on one core content;linear patterns demonstrate efficiently the driving process of stories;derived patterns express clearly by stating the reasons of the writer's arguments one after another.b.Constant patterns own the least proportion for it is good for a conclusion,not for the progression of a text.(3)LRPs: a.In spite of 2 ineffective patterns,RSC and the positive form of all patterns excel all with the highest percentages for they discuss from a regular andpositive perspective which leads to a more convincing result.b.RSNC are utilized the least for the LRPs are complicated which is not that easy to understand as a pamphlet for the readers.All in all,the study is of value for unveiling the rationality of the TPPs in CS by LRPs.It is looking forward to deepening understandings of literature works and serving as a modest spur of the researchers in the future.
