A Contrastive Study Of English And Chinese Food Words

Language reflects the world,different languages reflect different nations' world conceptions.Language embodies the way of human thoughts,while food is the most basic human needs.At the very beginning,the expression and description of food are the most simple and direct human cognition of the world.This thesis discusses the differences between Chinese and English food words through the perspective of the comparative on the word formation,the character of word collection and the way of naming.Then it sums up the differences of cognition between west and east,in order to provide several examples and references for CCC(cross culture commnication)and Mandarin learning.As the quantity of food word is enormous,the author limits the research in The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(Version ?).Firstly,picking the Chinese food words from The dictionary,then searching the corresponding English version by The Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(Chinese-English Edition 2002),The Chinese-English Dictionary(Version ?)and assisting with Youdao E-dictionary.Based on these,comparing the differences between Chinese and Engilsh food words,accociating with cognition differences between China and aborad,at last,explaining several culture phenomenon.This thesis mainly uses comparative method to do the comparison from the perspective of word formation,word collection feature,naming method,cognition etc..Hoping to discuss the differences on cognition and culture basing on the differences between Chinese and English food words.Chapter one is the introduction.This part mainly introduces the research object,research purpose,research significance,research background,research status at home and abroad and research methods.Moreover,this part illustrates the relevant key words which will be mentioned below.Chapter two to Chapter four are the body of this thesis.They analyze the Chinese and English food words from word formation,word collection feature and naming methods.At last,the author connects the feature of food words with Chinese culture and hopes to supply tips and methods for CCC and Mandarin learning.Chapter five is the conclusion.It concludes the features and differences of both Chinese and English food words,and concludes the congnition differences between Chinese and English nations,furthermore gives some suggestions on CCC and mandarin learning.
