A Report On The Translation Of C-Theory:Chinese Management Philosophy(Excerpts)(Chapter 3:Section 8-10)

This is a report on the Chinese-English translation of C-Theory: Chinese Management Philosophy(Chapter 3: Section8-10),one of the renowned works of Professor Chung-ying Cheng of University of Hawaii.Chung-ying Cheng,the representative of overseas study of Confucianism,has long been dedicating to introducing Chinese philosophy to the western world.C-Theory: Chinese Management Philosophy is a work incorporating the essence of Cheng's ideas.It generalizes the tradition of Chinese management as well as western scientific management and was widely welcomed by not only students majored in management,teachers interested in management,but also businessmen who are running a company or are learning how to effectively run a company.Hence,the translation work as a bridge of boundless exchange and sharing of ideas is significantly valuable for management.Extending from intrasentential and intersentential level,this report revealed the details of how to instruct translation practice under information structure theory.On the intrasentential level,the new information in each sentence was highlighted by attributive clause and adverbial clause.On the intersentential level,sentences which link each other with a logical relation such as the relation of causality and the relation of explanation were displayed.Accordingly,information structure theory was equally employed to guide the translation in this part.Since the theory has seldom been used to guide the translation from Chinese to English,the concept translating Chinese into English under the guidance of information structure theory provides the translator an insight into how to produce a coherent and readable text.
