In a world with multi-culture coexisting,promoting Chinese culture to the world has become an urgent need for China's construction of soft power.As an important means of cultural publicity,China's literature translation and introduction has attracted close attention and great support from the government in recent years,and therefore made some achievements,but the effect of which is still barely satisfactory.The number of English literary works translated into Chinese and the number of Chinese literary works translated into English are severely out of balance.Till now,those award-winning artistic works of China in western world have mostly reflected the darkness of China's modern society,which in the final analysis just cater to the western world and are biased(Xu Jun,Xu Cihui,2015:22).Therefore,how to show the real China to the world through literature translation and introduction has become a burning question for people working in this field.Lots of domestic scholars have carried out research for China's literature translation and introduction from many aspects,and it has turned out that among many factors the quality of translation would directly influence the effect.In view of this,we take intertextuality as the guiding theory with qualitative method,and put forward a new model by integrating previous studies on intertextuality and relevance theory.Then,taking Lin Yutang's translated works as examples,we illustrate the accelerating effect of intertextual translation strategies to cultural publicity from the perspective of relevance theory.It is hoped that this paper will provide some implications for the study of China's literature translation and transmission.Intertextuality means that,not any text in the world exists independently,instead we can always find the traces of other texts by any forms,and all texts are relevant and mutually reflected.Translation involves the communication of two different languages,cultures,history and social customs,and so on,and a translated version is the mixture of sounds from both the author and the translator,and it is the intertext deriving from the original text.Therefore,it is of great reference to make translation studies from the perspective of intertextuality.Intertextuality is often divided into two types: macro intertextuality and micro intertextuality.The former one is marked from broad sense,which means the reflection of culture,style,genre and so on;the latter one is marked from the narrow sense,which means mutualreference of words.So,we will discuss in detail the macro intertextuality and micro intertextuality involved in Lin Yutang's translated works,and make a deep analysis of the relationship between intertextual translation strategies and cultural promotion.Lin Yutang was once nominated for the Nobel Prize of Literature,and in last century,many of his English works were popular in the western world,that is why we take his translated works as examples and explore the significance of them to nowadays' cultural publicity of China.In this thesis,we are going to answer the following three research questions: 1)What are the manifestations of intertextual translation strategies involved in Lin Yutang's translated works? 2)Why would Lin Yutang adopt intertextual translation strategies in his translated works? 3)How do intertextual translation strategies promote cultural publicity? To solve these problems,we propose a new analytical framework by integrating previous studies of intertextuality,relevance theory,and translation.According to this framework,we firstly classify the manifestations of intertextual translation strategies in Lin Yutang's translated works.Then we intend to dig out the relevant factors involved in those intertextual translation strategies.Finally,we try to analyze the significance of relevant factors to cultural promotion in the intertextual translation strategies.The results prove that being influenced by different languages and cultures,translators will use intertextual translation strategies consciously or unconsciously,the detailed manifestations of which include macro-intertextuality and micro-intertextuality.People used to get cognition of different cultures through relevant information,and how much readers know about foreign cultures greatly depends on the degree of correlation between foreign culture and the culture system readers belong to.The higher the degree is,readers will find it easier for them to understand and accept foreign culture.Therefore,the reason why translators use intertextual translation strategies lies in making the optimal relevance between author's communicative intention and reader's expectation.Under optimal relevance,readers will get both the literal meaning and cultural information of the original text in the maximum level,thus cultural publicity will achieve an ideal effect.Therefore,translators should pay more attention to intertextual translation strategies so as to help promote cultural publicity and communication.
