Miao costume,the representation of Miao people's culture,is an external symbol of this minority.As a branch of Miao people,Side Comb Hmong of the northwestern Guizho,living intensively in the central region of Wumeng Mountain,is named after sidely wearing the hair in a bun with a wooden comb.Although the particularly geographic position grants this area the advantage of maintaining its traditionally cultural features,it also prevents researchers from doing careful study on it.With the long-term social development,women of Side Comb Hmong have given a full play to their wise to forming the unique dress and ornament style,creating and developing the distinct dress patterns.Meanwhile,the aesthetic value of art and reaserch value of culture on the dress are also full of uniqueness.The patterns of national costume are the significant carrier of showing national art,so Side Comb Hmong develops their own remarkable patterns.For those patterns looking simply but filling with mystery,analyzing the cause and expression of the themes,understanding the approaches and features of the style,discussing the cunltural meaning of the deeper level have Side Comb Hmong researched significantly.In addition,to better find and create beautiful things based on dissecting its aesthetic thinking,the principle of design and the method of styling to further enrich,apply and inherit its patterns,also may be a good way to keep the culture of Side Comb Hmong from losing,and then to reveal the abundant cultural meaning of Side Comb Hmong.Firstly,this paper aims to carry on a comprehensive analysis and study of the theory by mainly focusing on the style of dress patterns of Side Comb Hmong.Firstly,this thesis outlines the population distribution and historical culture of Side Comb Hmong on the basis of doing extensive field reaserches and analyzing relative literature materials.We all know that one of the important characteristics of people in the mountainous regions is to migrate for survival and development.Similarly,after the migration from generation to generation,most people of Side Comb Hmong primarily live gregariously in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of counties in Guizhou province while a small number of them live scattered among the dams in river valleys.Therefore,positioning in the four counties where Side Comb Hmong have lived intensively,including Nayong,Zhijin,Qianxi and Guanling,this paper adopts relative samples of its dress patterns,keeps records on specific contents and methods and then makes a conclusion based on the results of the survey.On the basis of field survey,this thesis analyzes the survey results of Side Comb Hmong's costume and its patterns in detail.After summarizing the various costumes in different areas,the paper concludes the similarities and differences among them.Meanwhile,it also conducts careful analyses on the patterns of the costumes.As the historical culture developed,women of Side Comb Hmong have created ample patterns under the influence of their artistic thinking and aesthetic experience,and themes have also derived new contents with different ethnic groups living together.Then,according to field research,the thesis adpots the approach of analyzing and inducing to classify the themes of style of Side Comb Hmong's dress patterns,including plant pattern,animal pattern,geometric pattern and synthetical pattern,which lays a foundation for making researches on the style and implication of its dress pattern.Next,the thesis performs the comprehensive analysis and study on the ways of style of Side Comb Hmong's dress patterns,respectively using the ways of showing theme image,synthesizing the time and space,programming to explore the techniques of these patterns' style.Secondly,starting with the patterns' basic and artistic characteristics,the paper expounds the features of the style of Side Comb Hmong's dress pattern.The features mainly involves practicability,perfection,randomness and abstraction.The artistic characteristics are mainly presented in two ways: artistry and spirituality,both of which are showed in symmetry and equilibrium,change and consistency and rhythm and rhyme;though the abundant themes and contents,this dissertation expounds the artisitic characteristics of Side Comb Hmong's dress pattern.On the other hand,by transforming the emotion,women of Side Comb Hmong reappear the thinking mode of their monority and deeper meaning of the pattern through the style.In conclusion,Side Comb Hmong's dress patterns shows a kind of spiritual beauty through reflection of symbolic attribute,specificly showing in records of migration and homeland,historical relics of primitive totem and worship of human reproduction.Hence,this dress pattern is full of rhyme and adorning charm.Finally,this paper concludes the factors of forming this people's dress pattern as a whole.Whereas,tracing the abundant patterns,they still have resulted from inheriting tradition,analogyizing things,regional limits and fusion of culture.On the basis of studying plastic arts about Side Comb Hmong's dress pattern,this paper has a far-reaching historical significance for protecting the culture of Side Comb Hmong and a realistic guiding impact on modern dress design.Meanwhile,the author hopes that it can lay a foundation for the future research on this topic with the help of data of this paper.
