John Updike is one of the greatest writers in American literature. He won almost all important literary prizes in the United States. His contribution to literature is not only excellent works, but themes and changes of times expressed in these works.Literary critics abroad and at home have studied the themes, culture background, writing techniques of his works.Little attention has been paid to his female characters. This thesis is going to analyze the manifestation and reasons of incomplete liberation of Janice, the wife of “Rabbit”,by using the famous British feminism theorist Juliet Mitchell's Marxist Feminism.By analyzing Janice's liberation process, the study shows that Janice's liberation in production structure, sexuality, reproduction and socialization of children is not complete. The reasons are Janice's negative attitudes about her abilities and rights, and society's prejudices and constraints towards women.Only when women work on these four aspects at the same time, can they get complete liberation. This thesis can help readers to understand Janice's dilemma of liberation in a new perspective by using Juliet's four dimensions theory: production structure, sexuality, reproduction and socialization of children and provide some enlightenment to help women get overall liberation by analyzing Janice.
