| Wu Jinding is a famous scholar in history of modern archaeology,he made important contribution to discovery and research on prehistoric archaeology and opening of archaeology career of southwest of China.The academic research in lifetime of Wu Jinding is mainly divided into two stages:Firstly,after studying in Academy of Chinese Learning of Tsinghua University and before studying in University of London,Wu Jinding completed Research on Habitus for People of Shandong depending on archaeology knowledge and training acquired from Academy of Chinese Learning of Tsinghua University;and during the period of teaching in Cheeloo University,he visited Pingling region for six times,then he discovered relics of Cheng Zi Ya.Subsequently,he completed Record of Visiting Ancient Sites of Pingling,with which he joined in archaeology group of historical language institute in 1930,acted as assistant researcher,participated in excavation of Cheng Zi Ya relics and Anyang Yinxu together with such scholars as Li Ji,Dong Zuobin,et al.,and written excavation report.He independently completed the third and fourth chapter of Report of Cheng Zi Ya Excavation,and modified other chapters in detail.His achievements in archaeology excavation was accepted by his colleagues in historical language institute.Secondly,it is about his academic experience during study abroad and after returning China.Given Wu’s contribution to archaeology,Fu Sinian and some other scholars made a great effort to procure the eligibility for Wu to study in Europe at state expense in 1933.As Wu participated in excavation of Chengziya Archaeological Site in China,during his study in the University of London in UK,he paid a special attention to prehistoric pottery and left for London Central Industrial School to study fabrication of primitive pottery.Later he participated in archaeological excavation in Pakistan together with the archaeological master Petrie.Petrie was deeply impressed by his study attitude and academic records.Petrie said that Wu was good at field work.During his study abroad,Wu wrote and published his doctoral dissertation Prehistoric Pottery in China,which was rated as “the most detailed reference book about prehistoric pottery in China”.At the end of 1937,Wu returned China and was hired by the Preparation Division of National Central Museum.From January 1938 to March 1943,as a leader,Wu set up Cang’er Historical Site Investigation Team,Chuankang Historical Site Investigation Team and Qintai Sorting Work Team.This was of pioneering significance for archaeology in southwest area of China.In 1945,Wu Jinding joined the army and left historical language institute.After victory of anti-Japanese war,Wu Jinding returned to Cheeloo University for acting as professor till to death in 1948.In his lifetime,he experienced lots of setbacks,but he has abundant research achievements.However there is seldom data left,therefore he was assessed with both praises and criticisms.The paper reviews the deeds,academic researches and achievements in the main stages of his lifetime by carefully reading narration regarding Wu Jinding in academy circle,and deposited documents in the historical language institute of Taiwan Academia Sinica,and textually distinguishes and corrects some incorrect statements and errors in regard to his life stories by using new data,assesses and concludes his academy achievements and historical status as well,for the purpose of comprehensively researching the case of Wu Jinding to accurately evaluate him. |
