Hong Shen is a famous dramatist and dramatic critic.Hong Shen created or translated 56 plays in all his life,among them,the adapted plays among translation works has a unique value.This article makes a compasion of Hong Shen's adapted play to the original dramas in text and theoretical practice,analyzes the reasons of difference between the source text and the target text,aims to find the value of Hong Shen‘s adaptated plays,elucidates several thinking points on Chinese modern adaptated dramas.Besides preface and epilogue,this article is mainly composed of four parts:The first chapter introduces Hong Shen's adapted plays and the original dramas respectively.Hong Shen adapted four plays: "Young Mistress' s Fan","The Second Dream","The Parasitic grass,"The black bat",The black bat has lost.The first three works are adapted by the following three works respectively: Lady Windermere's Fan(by Oscar Wilde),Dear Brutus(by James Matthew Barrie)and The Mollusc(by Hubert Henry David).The second chapter compares the original dramas with adapted plays.The first segment aims to find the differences about places' names,people's names,plot,characters and use of language between the original version and Hong Shen's versions;the second segamet discusses differences from three aspects: the stage direction,respectively is: stage sets,props,costumes of characters,drama's emotion and action,subjectivization objectification of dramatic characters;the third segment analyzes identical points from the following aspects:main theme connotation,The technique of describing space and time and plot's clues.The third chapter explains the causes.This chapter discusses reasons from four aspects:the cultural background of era,Hong Shen's views about literature,Hong Shen‘s performance theories of plays and Hong Shen's translation theories.In terms of the first perspective,three plays embodies the distinctive spirit of the different ages;from the second perspective,Hong Shen insists the strategies of sinicization,localization and nationalization;from the third perspective,the text focuses on the theoretical practice in drama movement,emotion and sound;from the last point,Hong Shen combines two methods of translation,that is,literal translation and free translation methods.The fourth chapter affirms the value of Hong Shen's adapted plays and rethinks it.In terms of value,this article demonstrates that from four fields: modern drama's contemporaneity,plays' s influence on the modern drama's movement,strategy of the sinicization,the theoretical value.Inevitably,there also exists two deficiencies,such as the utilitarian tendency in literal expression and subjective tendency in character portraying.In addition,by reviewing the phenomenon about dramas' adaption,this article hence find several issues worthy of study and reflection.
