Lawrence was a prolific and controversial literary master who was famous for novels in the 20 th century in England. However, with broadened research, his short fictions aroused people's concern gradually. With compact structure and concise subject,Lawrence created distinct female characterizations in a penetrating sense.Realizing the literary value, the author of this thesis shits attention to his novellas and short stories and analyzes those female figures from the perspective of maternity which have great value but are easily ignored by critics. The author finds and then classifies the various maternal figures into three types by selecting six typical maternal figures in Lawrece's short fictions, and then analyzes them with relevant theories and materials.Firstly, the selfless maternal figures in Daughters of the Vicar and England,My England are analyzed for their selfless and holy maternal love. Then the author attributes the main causes to both the oppression of patriarchal society and Lawrence's views on women after the World War One.Secondly, the author analyzes the desire-centered maternal figures taking the two “unbecoming” mothers as examples in The Sun and The Rocking-Horse Winner, and makes a detail analysis of the instinctive desire's oppression of women and the negative effect of money-worship.Thirdly,the author analyzes controlling maternal figures in The Lovely Lady and Mother and Daughter and then points out that“fixation” and Oedipus Complex have something to do with such abnormal love, while the original cause is materialization.Conclusively, the author points out that there are three typical types of maternal figures with various causes in his novellas and short stories. The desire-centered and the controlling maternal figures deserve deeper researches because of the abnormal love.
