Abstract/Summary:
This report is based on a simultaneous interpreting task by the author in a training lecture on Huawei brand strategies during her internship at the Interpreting Division of Huawei Translation Services Center. In the report, how the author prepared through interpreting practice and corporate training for interpreting tasks delivery and also the entire process of the interpreting task are presented, and the major types of disfluencies that occurred in the output of the author are discussed and analyzed. It was the first time that the author had conducted simultaneous interpreting in a real working environment.During the pre-task preparation, the author familiarized herself with ICT terminology and Huawei brand strategies by using HI Search,iSearch,3MS and other Huawei internal corporate websites. As the lecture was about brand strategies,it was not very technical, but the speaker was doing an impromptu speech at a high speech rate.Although there were repeats and redundancies in his speech,it was still challenging for the author.During the task, the author used the strategies of anticipation, waiting, compression and omission to deal with the challenges that the author encountered.By doing this simultaneous interpreting task, the author learned how to use simultaneous interpreting equipment and to control her breath and acoustic quality, understood the importance of cooperation with the interpreting partner, and also perceived her disfluencies in simultaneous interpreting. On the basis of existing classifications of disfluencies, the author categorized and analyzed her disfluencies that appeared during this interpreting task. There are four major types of disfluencies in the output of the author, namely pauses, syllable lengthenings, repeats and self-repairs.The analysis may help the author and other trainee interpreters to improve and to better monitor their output in future simultaneous interpreting practice.
