A Report On The Translation Of American Geography Text Book

This is a report on the translation of an American geography text book for junior students,which tells many mysteries hidden in the geographical environment so that students can,from the perspective of geography,understand and appreciate the world they live in,and enhance the curiosity about geographical objects and phenomena,and gradually develop the interest in learning and exploring the geography.The original textbook has its linguistic features.There are many proper nouns,and sometimes,some of them are similar to each other.The sentences in the original text are often short.Interrogative sentences are often used.In the process of translating,Yan Fu's translation criteria of “ Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance” were followed,trying to keep loyal to the original text(faithfulness),to ensure the accuracy and fluency of its meaning(expressiveness)and to make the translated text beautiful in writing style(elegance).To reach that standard,various translation techniques were adopted,such as addition,omission,unpacking and conversion.The translation of the original text can help translators to have a better understanding of the theories from a new perspective,and can provide some valuable information for the compilation of geography textbook in Chinese middle schools as well as the teaching idea of American educational system,which can provide a reference value for the reform of Chinese educational system.
