A Study Of Application Of The Thematic Progression Theory Into Chinese-English Consecutive Interpretation

This paper discusses application of the thematic progression theory into Chinese-English consecutive interpretation.At first,the author reviews the main research findings of the thematic progression theory,lists and analyzes 7 common thematic progression patterns.Then,he elaborates on his application of three most frequently-used thematic progression patterns,namely the constant thematic progression pattern,the simple linear progression pattern,and the cross pattern into his interpretation practice and comments on the corresponding results.Then,the author summarizes the lexical and grammatical cohesive devices which can facilitate the interpreter to apply the thematic progression patterns into the consecutive interpretation practice.In the end,the author analyzes the reasons to maintain or change the thematic progression patterns of the source language in the target language speech.It is proposed by the author that as the hearer of the source language speaker,by analyzing the thematic progression modes of the source language speech,an interpreter can have a better command of a speaker’s train of thought and predict the possible development trend of the speech,so that he can grasp the principal information and clarify the relationship of different information.As the speaker to the target language audience,by remaining or adjusting the thematic progression pattern of the source language speech,an interpreter can promote the coherence and readability of the target language speech thus to promote the effective communication between the source language speaker the target language hearers.Therefore,the author draws a conclusion that the thematic progression theory is of practical significance to Chinese-English consecutive interpretation and can also provide a new perspective to interpreting teaching practice.
