A Song of Ice and Fire is a serial epic fantasy novels written by George R.R.Martin,an American writer in fantasy,horror and science fiction style,who is praised as “one of 2011’s most influential people” by Time magazine.This novel contains seven volumes with the first one published in 1996.A Song of Ice and Fire is considered as George R.R.Martin’s masterpiece,which makes him famous throughout the world.A Song of Ice and Fire tells a story which occurs in a fictional medieval continent called Westeros,which is full of royal conflict,political struggle and combat.This novel has a rich content and vivid description.George R.R.Martin uses the method of grand narrative.Additionally,every character doesn’t know when he/she will die,which is a distinguishing feature different from other fantasy novels.In A Song of Ice and Fire,women live in a patriarchal society in which men have most of power and discourse while women are subordinate to men,oppressed and dominated by men.They can’t decide what they want or who they will be and what’s more,they live their life to satisfy men and lose themselves.This study aims at analyzing female awakening in A Song of Ice and Fire from the perspective of feminism,especially liberal feminism.This paper focuses on the process of awakening in Daenerys Targaryen and Sansa Stark.It discusses their female consciousness according to their status in different periods.The reason why they change and awaken to strong women and how they accomplish that will be explored in detail.In the end,even if they surrendered to men before and lost their discourse,they finally realize that they are able to earn power and rights just like others.They control their choices about life and struggle with oppression from society.They fail in the beginning but they awaken to resist and subvert the male domination to play a role and survive bravely in the man-dominated world,like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
