This thesis aims at finding out the situation of Chinese language education in Hokkaido of Japan by investigating university students.The investigation was made in three universities: Sapporo University,Hokkai School of Commerce and Hokkaido Bunkyo University,which are distinctive in Hokkaido.Sapporo University is the only university which has Chinese language major.In addition,it is where the only Confucius Institute of Hokkaido founded.Hokkai School of Commerce focus on business studies but it also enthusiastic about studying China and Korea.Most of the students who has the experience of learning Chinese will be studying abroad in China for 6 months.There were majors of English,Chinese and Japanese in Hokkaido Bunkyo University when it was founded in 1999.However,those three majors were combined into “Faculty of International Language” in 2010 and it stopped enrolling new students of Chinese language major in 2016.The survey includes the current situation and history of Chinese language education in those three universities,as well as teacher and students' teaching and studying,textbook,lessons and activities.The situations in investigated universities are different so that this thesis focus on finding out advantages and shortcomings of each university's teaching method by comparison.According to the findings,most of the students' purpose of studying Chinese is "for the future".However they feels that learning Chinese is difficult,especially the listening and pronunciation.They are not willing to speak Chinese or communicate with Chinese.As a result,they can't make big progress even when they have taken advanced course.Although Teachers requires students to speak more and suggest that universities should provide more chances for Japanese students and Chinese students to communicate,the results shows that universities hold less activities because students are unwilling to participate in those activities.In conclusion,students should communicate with Chinese more actively in order to improve their language skill.Finally the purpose and target level of Japanese students' Chinese learning will be summed up.
