This qualitative and quantitative study aims to show the significance of the communicative function of the quoted speech in the quoting verb translation process and discover why on some cases translators of the two target versions rendered the same “dao” into specified quoting verbs that have different speech event functions.Through analysis of the two theoretical bases--M.A.K.Halliday's verbal process participants and Roman Jakobson's speech event functions, their interdependence is revealed: verbiage, one participant of verbal process, consists of the quoting verb and the quoted speech, and both of the two components can indicate the communicative function of the quoted speech. For this, the significance of the communicative function of the quoted speech in the quoting verb translation process can be predicted. After detailed analyses of the 309 study objects with the help of the theoretical bases, this study has two major findings: firstly,it is the translators' different comprehensions--different comprehension degree and different foci on the same speech that caused them to render the same “dao” into specified quoting verbs of different speech event functions;secondly, there are two things that have great influence on the specification of “dao”: one thing is the communicative function of the quoted speech, and the other thing is the emphasis on the sayer, such as the sayer's emotions, personalities,or status.Since this study provides a fresh perspective to quoting verb translation, the discoveries here can help to enrich studies in the quoting verb translation field.
