The Narrative Analysis Of The Film "Three Idiots"

At the beginning of 21 th century,while inheriting the national character of Indian traditional films,the Bollywood also made a reformation by learning from the narrative of Hollywood and absorbing rich and diverse narrative styles and skills to form a new style of India film—“ the new concept Indian films”."Three Idiots",which is directed by Indian famous director Rajkumar Hirani,is a campus theme inspirational movie.This movie became the both box office champions in India and overseas."Three Idiots" is one of the best of “the new concept Indian films” for it wins several awards in the world.But now the academic community pays little attention to this film and the literatures which use the theory of narratology to research it are also deficient.All of these reasons make this study about "Three Idiots" valuable and significant.This paper uses film narratology and case study method to study the value and implication of ” the three idiots” in detail,in depth and in the round,through the analysis of the film narrative contents,narrative strategies and audio-visual languages in the foundation of collecting lots of dates and absorbing the researches written by other scholars.Through the research,the author finds that the director has constructed a complete and strict narrative system through the skillful use of narrative content,narrative strategy and audio-visual language.The movie successfully creates four types of character--"perfect figure","the epitome of ordinary people","unrepresentative villain"," the emotional clue character" and makes the social problems into the plot tactfully to give this movie the realistic and romantic double-theme.The film tells the story in the first personal point of view “I” to expand the narrative tension.In the nonlinear narrative structure of mixed reality and memory,the director makes the movie intricate and full of interest by using the narrative strategies of setting suspense,sudden change and foreshadowing.The changes of close-up shot and moving shot and the bright and beautiful colors do not only give theaudiences special Audio-visual enjoyment,but also strengthen the narrative tone and deepen the narrative theme.The dialogues of the movie reveal the traits of characters lively and the asides serve as a link between past and future skillfully.The melodies and the background music make the finishing point on character shaping,atmosphere construction and affection expression.
