Analysis Of Interpreting Preparations According To The Sequential Model Of Translation

In simultaneous interpreting,the interpreter needs to follow the speaker closely.As the speaker begins to talk,the interpreter starts to interpret and when the speaker stops talking,the interpreter also stops.Thus,in simultaneous interpreting,the interpreter does not have enough time to look up new words,terminology and to prepare background knowledge.The information is usually very important and can't be ignored.Simultaneous interpreting is different from translation while translators can have enough time to prepare relevant news,books,background knowledge,and terminology.Interpreters mainly depend on long-term knowledge and preparations before a conference.Simultaneous interpreting is also different from consecutive interpreting while interpreters have the chance to re-organize their speech.In simultaneous interpreting,the interpreter has to be focused and he does not have the time to turn to other's help.Thus,a qualified interpreter must prepare as comprehensively as possible before the conference to make sure his interpretation is correct.This thesis analyzes preparation before interpreting and problems caused by insufficient preparation under the guidance of Daniel Gile's sequential model of translation.Preparations include theme preparation,glossary preparation and interactions with the speaker.The sequential model of translation has important meaning for interpreting learners,especially for beginners.The sequential model can be used to analyze problems in simultaneous interpreting.This thesis is under the guidance of the sequential model of translation and uses a mock forum of the Foreign Studies College of NEU as example to analyze preparation before the forum and problems caused by insufficient preparation.The topic of the mock forum is U.S political system and it is delivered in English.This thesis analyzes problems caused by insufficient preparations.And insufficient preparations are insufficient command of source language,insufficient analysis in the comprehension phase,weak extra-linguistic knowledge,insufficient efforts in ad hoc knowledge acquisition and insufficient efforts in the reformulation loop.The thesis also gives advices for future improvement and suggestion to solve problems including glossary enlargement,listening capacity improvement,anti-pressure ability improvement,and ad hoc knowledge acquisition.
