The Study Of Humorous Effects Achieved By Violating Cooperative Principle In Sitcom Big Bang Theory

Humor,as a very common language feature in people's daily life,attracts lots of attention from various scholars on different field.Among their researches,the contents mainly focus on the different forms of humor and its provoking mechanism.When Grice firstly put forward cooperative principles,scholars have found it closely related to verbal humor.There are many researches that require speakers to obey the maxims of cooperative principles when concerning the relation between verbal humor and cooperative principles.This thesis tries to analyze some typical dialogues in Big Bang Theory to discover how people can produce humor properly.The research questions in this thesis are:(1)How is humor produced by violating cooperative principle and how does humor mechanism work?(2)How human relationship can develop better by violating cooperative principle?(3)By analyzing conversations,what linguistic purposes can be reached and how do they attribute to people's daily life?The thesis also points out that to understand humor better can be helpful to interpersonal relationships.Most of the audiences are forced to laugh since they hear the laughter in the sitcom because they do not understand the implied meanings behind the scene.It is essential to simplify humor-provoking mechanism since it helps audiences understand American sitcom in a better way.
