"Yinggai" and "Yingdang" are a pair of synonyms that are often used in contemporary Chinese language. There is not much research on the contrast between the two words. This paper inspects their differences between "Yinggai" and "Yingdang" in collocation, modality and register.The first part is a brief introduction that introduces the background, contents,significance, method of research and corpus source.The second part researches from the perspective of collocation. "Yinggai" and"Yingdang" are auxiliary verb. It is found that there are differences between the"Yinggai" and "Yingdang" when they are connected with the volitional verbs and nonvolitional verbs. There are also differences between the "Yinggai" and "Yingdang"when they are connected with the auxiliary verb, "Shuo". The structure that "Yinggai"and "Yingdang" are followed by verb is predication. When we respond to a thank you in a conversation, we generally use the "Yinggai" rather than the "Yingdang".The third part researches from the perspective of modality. "Yinggai" expresses the epistemic modality and deontic modality more freely. "Yingdang" generally expresses the deontic modality. "Yinggai" expresses the deontic modality obligation. "Yingdang"expresses the deontic modality necessary. There are differences between the modality of"Yinggai" and "Yingdang", when they are concurrence with the whole mark and the non whole mark. "Yinggai" and "Yingdang" are in the expression of epistemic modality, and also express the evidentiality. "Yinggai" and "Yingdang" are in the expression of deontic modality, but not express the evidentiality.The forth part researches from the perspective of register. There are register differences between "Yinggai" and "Yingdang", reflected in the quantity distribution and grammatical features. This is related to the difference between "Yinggai" and "Yingdang"and the different functions of the register.The fifth part is the conclusion, summarizes the research results of the full paper,introduces the innovation, and points out the shortcomings.
