| As an independent art category, film and literature have their own expression and language system, but the two are also inextricably linked. For the film, the literary work is an important source of the film script, and its extensive theme injects new vitality into the creation of the film;and for literature, through organic integration with film and television via adaptation, the film’s extensive range of performance provides more possibilities based on the expressive function in the literature.Adaptation produces a new possibility between the novel and the film, and the imagination of arts and the dual nature of the rational spirit of thought feast the audience with more aesthetic experience. As an intersection of film and literature, adaption not only broadens the road for the acceptance and dissemination of literature, but also expands the market effect and influence of films.Meanwhile,as an artistic transformation process, adaption is a labor full of individuality and creativities. We can see that the adapted film is an artistic product totally independent of the original work due to the adaptor’s different understanding and artistic feelings towards original work as well as the change of social backgrounds and environments, thus the adapted film work can also present various styles. As a famous Japanese public literature writer,Miyao Tomiko is committed to the creation of female theme novels. Her early works are based on the background of her life experience, profoundly depicting the elegance of geisha, men and women in the society and the relationship between husband and wife;her later works go deep into the Japanese traditional arts world around the thoughtful and able woman growing up in Japan, delicately expressing the beauty of Japanese humanity. Her works have been awarded repeatedly in the Japanese literary circles and almost everyone has been adapted for television, screen or stage play. What’s more, her adapted films have won various awards as well.Miyao Tomiko’s novels are mainly about women with strong feminist consciousness, but in her adapted films, the female subject consciousness contained in her original works is diluted, rewritten and replaced in varying degrees and even dispelled. This paper focuses on the concrete manifestation of this change in the works implying gender culture during adaption, and tries to explore the social andcultural causes behind it.This paper is divided into five parts. The introduction part mainly introduces the basic creation information and the present situation of Miyao Tomiko as well as her adapted films. The first chapter summarizes the female performance in Japanese literature and the background of Japanese female literature after the war,and analyzes the works and the female consciousness of Miyao Tomiko. In the second chapter, through the analysis of the historical background and characteristics of the filming of Miyao’s works,it paves the way for the next comparative analysis of novels and adapted films. In the third chapter, from the perspective of gender in adapted films,it reads carefully the text of Miyao Tomiko’s adapted films and compares the difference between the novel and the film as well as the change of the feminist consciousness in the novel in the process of film adaptation from the aspects of the plot and narration, the character image, the theme thought and the audio-visual language by using the feminist literary theory and the feminism film theory. The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the causes of the change in the process of film adaptation from the aspects of media difference, the atmosphere of the times, the interest demands, the aesthetic atmosphere, the value recognition and the creative subject. |
