Since 1960 s,with the appearance and development of humanistic psychology, the affective problems in language teaching gradually attract people’s attention.Humanistic psychology holds that the affective factors of learners have positive or negative influence on the English learning. However,in current teaching process of vocational colleges, the teachers stress the cognitive factors in language learning too much, while neglect the influence of affective factors on language learning. The motivation and anxiety in affective factors have been studied by a lot of former researchers, but the researches on self-esteem are relatively rare. Moreover, the former research subjects are mainly including junior school students, senior high school students or even college students, while there is almost no research focusing on the vocational college students this group. The thesis sets 108 students majoring in constructional engineering in Gui Lin University of Technology as research subjects. The thesis obtains their real self-esteem status through the questionnaire survey on non-English major students in the vocational college and demonstrates the influence of non-English major students’ self-esteem status on their English academic achievement by doing the correlation analysis after collecting their English academic scores. And the thesis tries to figure out the main factor that influences non-English major students’ self-esteem level in the vocational college by doing personal interview. The results of the research are as follows:Firstly,non-English major students’ self-esteem level has an effect on their English academic achievement in the vocational college. They are positively related, that is,the students with high self-esteem have greater English academic performance;while the students with low self-esteem have a relatively bad English academic achievement. There are so many factors influencing English academic achievement.Self-esteem as one of factors only can influence English academicachievement, but cannot determine the English academic achievement.However,self-esteem this factor also should be paid enough attention to.Secondly, there are a lot of factors that influence non-English major students’ self-esteem level in the vocational college, but the main factor is previous second language proficiency. Therefore, the study proposes the importance of lifting the students’ self-esteem level in the vocational college in order to improve their English academic achievement.
