Redundancy refers to extra information in communication. In the process of information transfer, people usually send messages more than limited need, and the extra part is redundancy. The current research conducts a study on redundant words in writings of Chinese non-English major students through quantitative and qualitative approaches based on Chinese Learners English Corpus (CLEC). First, on the basis of Error Analysis theory, and with the help of concordance software AntConc3.2.4w, the frequencies and characteristics of redundant words in non-English major students'writings in CLEC are calculated and analyzed. Second, the most frequent redundant words are analyzed. Third, possible causes of redundant words are summarized. The results show that first, the frequency of redundant words of learners in CET Band 6 is lower than that of learners in CET Band 4, but for words of certain parts of speech, the number appears in the opposite way; second, the most frequent redundant words are presented in various patterns, the main reasons of this phenomenon are negative transfer of mother tongue and insufficient knowledge of target language. Finally, pedagogical implication and some advice are shown for Chinese English teaching.
